Toys/Activities

Is there anything the kid will play with that doesn’t feature sirens/animal sounds? (Just for a change of pace once in a while?) Am I really supposed to believe you need special equipment to get him to lie on his stomach? And what the @#(% is a “baby positioner”?

  1. Trust me, you want it to make noise. It keeps baby quiet and happy :)

And there are several schools of thought on the positioner. We used it, don't know if he actually needed it, and by maybe 2 months, he was pulling it out from under himself because he hated it.

  2. We had a side sleeper but didn't find it to be very useful. As for toys, you'll find that if it keeps the kid quiet, it will become your favorite. (BTW we have a stuffed bear covered in stars that our oldest still takes with him when going to grandma's)

  3. toys that light up and make noise, that are tactile to touch. rattles. you dont need anything special for tummy time. use toys and a blanket or activity mat.

i have a vented wedge to keep them uprught a little bit for reflux/nasal drainage. i dont think u really need it...

  4. You don't need toys for the first several months. Wait until Lincoln Financial is grasping things, or at least able to aim with his feet and kick things (3 mo).

Teething rings are good around 3 months. I liked the water filled ones, or wooden ones. They also like to just chew a clean washcloth.

Swings are great!!!!! Get a quiet one. Frills are a waste of money. Just make it a safe one.

You will be given so many toys, and you won't use half of them. So just wait, don't buy.

A soothing sound machine in the nursery is nice, or a favorite CD of lulabyes (or perhaps the Chesapeake Chorale sing Stravinski, just kidding).

  5. A baby positioner helps them sleep at night. It can help them not flip over, or sleep slightly on their side, and keeps them from rolling over onto their tummy. It also can give them a sense of comfort, especially when they startle. Not necessary to have.

A noise machine is very helpful. Mine sleep to the sound of falling rain. Can be found at BRU and BB&B. There are different schools of thought on having them fall asleep to music. If you would like to inquire, we can chat.

If he gets cranky, and you just fed and put him down...there is a cool trick with a hairdyer. (again, another thing to be verbally explained)

Toys, won't need much until he is about 2 months old. We loved our playmat, bouncy seat and swing. You can also use the Boppy for much more than feeding. Aide in tummy time and for just letting him snuggle in it himself on the floor.

Rattles are fun, as well as teethers. If the toy/object can fit through a toilet paper tube, don't give it or let it near the baby.

At about 4 - 5 months, you can invest in an activity table. We have one that is round, and has a seat that can move around the table. They can walk themselves around or just stand in there. The seat comes off when you don't need it anymore.

We have an array of toys, ones that sing, light up, make noise, and then others that don't do any of that.

soft books/cloth books are great too. Start reading early. Babies love looking at other babies and of course in the mirror. a kid-safe mirror is some of the best entertainment for a baby. It is also great to prop in front of them while they are on their tummy.
